"There are many pathways up the mountain"...well 22 main paths of Yoga. Hatha Yoga is one of the 22 paths and most commonly practiced through postures. This technique has the ability to balance the forces in our bodies, preparing for deeper transformation. Finding greater physical harmony and easing any bodily discomfort, our attention is then invited inward. As it is said "When you go within you never go without."
The root of Yoga is to unite, join or bring together. Hatha or Ha and Tha represents the "joining" of the two polarities to bring balance and harmony. The polarities are the concepts of Day (Ha) and Night (Tha) or Masculine and Feminine, Sun and Moon and Right and Left. Balance is achieved with the practice of postures(asanas) and breath work(pranayama). The postures strengthen and ready the body and the breath work steadies the mind preparing for extended periods of meditation.
The yoga sutras is the first compilation of yoga. The second sutra states "Yoga città vrtti nirodhah" Yoga is the process of stilling the fluctuations of the mind.
Understanding the effects of the fluctuations brings great insight to our own inner workings, actions, habits and patterns. Purposeful activation of the polarities or "channels" are effective ways to achieve optimal functions of the bodily processes. Therefore creating better health and wellbeing both physically and mentally.
